Presentation Of The Cattery, Our Mission.
On this page, we would like to introduce the everyday life of the GREYHEART Cattery, as well as the members of our team, about whom you can find interesting and personal information. Through our blog posts, you’ll gain insight into the life of this unique, temperament-rich breed, and we’ll also share updates on the exhibitions we’ve attended and the places where we’ve promoted the Transylvanian breed.
Our goal is to make all useful and trustworthy information available to those interested in the breed — including up-to-date news about the current status of the breed’s official registration.
… when, as a hobby but with great enthusiasm, we welcomed our first Transylvanian individuals. We were fascinated by the unique color of the breed, its special coat structure — light undercoat with contrasting patterns — and their changes. But what truly captured our hearts was their exceptional attachment and human-centered nature. During an in-depth online search, we came across this special, indigenous breed from the Carpathian Basin — and since then, it has become a central part of our lives.
GreyHeart Cattery is a dedicated Transylvanian cat breeding program based in the Carpathian Basin, Hungary. Our mission is to preserve and enhance the original character, physical structure, and vitality of this unique and rare breed.
Our breeding is guided by a focus on natural temperament, harmonious body structure, and excellent health. All of our cats are registered with the World Cat Federation (WCF), and every litter is carefully evaluated with continuous selection based on the official WCF Transylvanian breed standard.
We regularly present our cats at national and international shows, proudly representing not only the GreyHeart name but the future of the Transylvanian breed itself.
We believe in open communication and the power of collaboration, and we actively maintain connections with fellow Transylvanian breeders around the world.

Our first breeding cat was HOPE, the world’s first registered blue Transylvanian tomcat, who formed a wonderful pair with Léna. Later, CITRA joined them, forming the first GreyHeart bloodline. Their descendants all carried the breed’s characteristic traits: special appearance, refined behavior, and deep attachment to humans. Some of them now live as family pets in their new homes or help people as therapy cats.
.
Our kittens stay with us until they are 4–6 (10) months old. During this time, we monitor their development, appearance, and character to later form only the best breeding pairs — based not only on their appearance but also their temperament. We focus on the proper coat structure, the contrast of the Carpathian pattern, body structure, and pay special attention to DNA testing, which we perform on every individual.
We select only the most excellent, fully suitable individuals for breeding — the majority of these remain with us to carry on the GreyHeart legacy. Our goal is to reach the VI generation of registered Transylvanian cats and, by collaborating with international breeders, to have the breed recognized by the world’s leading cat organizations. We select only the finest individuals for breeding, those that meet all requirements — the vast majority of them stay with us to carry on the GreyHeart legacy.
We refuse to incorporate other breeds, which would dilute the ancient Carpathian genetic pool of the Transylvanian cats, mixing ‘foreign’ traits into later breeding lines in pursuit of external appearances, which adversely alters the breed’s characteristics. In our opinion, there are enough individuals found in the Carpathian Basin to carry out breeding work without inbreeding or incorporating other breeds! The breed is a young one, still in the process of registration, so we consider it important to preserve the breed’s natural purity from the beginning.
Our goal is to achieve the VI generation of registered Transylvanian cats and, in collaboration with international breeders, to have the breed recognized by the world’s leading cat organizations.
This unique genetic diversity allows us to avoid inbreeding and build stable, healthy bloodlines in the long term.
GreyHeart cats are already bringing joy to their owners in many countries: Croatia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Romania, Canada, the United States, and Finland.
The Transylvanian cat is an indigenous breed from the Carpathian Basin, standing out with its strong temperament and special appearance.
Size and reproduction: Females weigh 2.5–3 kg and usually give birth to 3–6 kittens. Males range between 5–5.5 kg.
Coat: The breed’s coat is short, coarse, and strong, with a light undercoat. The top coat is black n28, but blue a28 is also accepted as per the standard. The coat is lighter on the “points,” differing from the base color, which is the Carpathian pattern.
Transylvanian kittens are born weighing 100–140g. After birth, they are light, almost white in color. At this stage, it can already be determined what color they will be and how strong their pattern will develop. The kittens’ coat darkens continuously, which may lead some experts to confuse it with the “fever coat” phenomenon. However, it is important to note that this darkening is natural, and their color and structure gradually form. Their final coat color and structure reach maturity around 1 year of age.
Transylvanian cats are calm, playful, and gentle. They are extremely human-centered and often love multiple owners. They are particularly friendly with other animals and same-sex cats.
Reproduction and Mating Behavior
Females come into heat very quietly, without the usual vocalization or obvious signs — their receptivity is mostly noticeable through subtle changes in body language. Approximately 90% of males do not spray or mark their territory, which is one of the unique traits of the breed.
At the GreyHeart kennel, we place great emphasis on avoiding inbreeding to preserve the genetic diversity of the Transylvanian cats. To this end, we incorporate external (only Transylvanian) bloodlines into our breeding program. Recently, we have welcomed several cats and their mothers belonging to the Transylvanian breed.
Monitoring the development and socialization of newly arrived kittens is a longer process. Their external and internal traits, as well as their temperament, develop over months, and during this time, they quickly earn our attachment with their friendly nature.
The Jáci-Csapi-Szebeni GreyHeart cats and their companions are living proof that the Transylvanian cat heritage lives on. As breeders, we are committed to preserving, developing, and promoting this exceptional breed. Both the memories of the past and our current work serve the same goal: to ensure that this unique old/new cat breed remains part of the Carpathian Basin’s history and daily life for many years to come.
GreyHeart cattery breed all kittens in accordance with the animal welfare and health regulations of the European Union (EU). The inclusion and care of kittens and adult cats in the breeding program fully comply with the relevant EU animal welfare laws, including veterinary health and breeding minimum requirements.
Each kitten undergoes the necessary DNA testing, ensuring purebred status and a healthy genetic background, and complies with the highest breeding standards. Kittens born here come with pedigree papers, an EU pet passport, and age-appropriate vaccinations. The breeding process is strictly monitored to meet the veterinary health standards set by the EU.
In line with our own quality expectations, we apply a proven and accepted breeding program for other already registered breeds, which ensures GreyHeart quality!
