GREYHEART TRANSYLVANIAN CATTERY

Csapi Mimi's first kittens at GreyHeart cattery

Mimi and Haruto’s kittens have arrived into the world of GreyHeart

One of life’s most beautiful moments is when new arrivals enter the world – especially when they are part of a breeding program built with heart, soul, and deep awareness. With great joy and deep emotion, we share the news: the first kittens of Csapi Mimi GreyHeart and Haruto GreyHeart have been born!

This litter consists of five healthy kittens, whose birth marks not only the beginning of a new generation, but also the culmination of a touching story – one that intertwines the destinies of two very special cats, while bringing a deeper connection between them and us, humans.

MIMI – the mother cat who builds trust slowly but deeply

Mimi’s story is special in itself. She was not born in our cattery – we adopted her at the age of three, already a grown female. She came to us from the small, historically-rooted village of Csapi in Zala County. When she first stepped into the GreyHeart home, she was shy and distrustful – understandably, as she found herself surrounded by a new environment, new people, and new rules.

It took time for her to accept us. We didn’t force it – we allowed her to open up at her own pace, and the most important keys were patience and consistent affection. During her pregnancy, it became increasingly clear that Mimi was beginning to feel at home, but the real breakthrough came during the birth. We stayed quietly by her side the entire time – not interfering, but being present. Our calmness, care, and gentle support helped her over the edge: at that moment, she accepted us into her trust.

Since then, she sees us differently – she doesn’t just tolerate us anymore, she seeks us out, watches us, cuddles. A relationship was born – one that cannot be rushed, only earned.

HARUTO – a28 Blue Carpathian, a powerful bearer of the Transylvanian lineage

Haruto GreyHeart is already a well-known name in our cattery. Our male is not only visually stunning, but also a remarkable genetic contributor. This was already proven with his first litter, but this current pairing with Mimi is even more exciting – as it brings together two vastly different backgrounds and temperaments, and creates a wonderful balance.

This is Haruto’s second litter, and it’s already clear that his diluting traits are strongly visible in the kittens’ coat patterns. Their fur plays in unique shades, and the typical characteristics of the Carpathian color variant are already clearly noticeable even at this early age. Based on their coat texture, tonal contrast, and pattern distribution, these tiny bodies will grow into very promising kittens.

A new generation – new hopes

The kittens were born on March 16, 2025, with birth weights ranging between 110 and 150 grams. The litter includes three boys and two girlsfour of them are n28 in color, while one kitten inherited Haruto’s characteristic a28 blue Carpathian shade.

These newborn kittens are exceptional in many ways. They come from a genetically unique pairing: Mimi’s natural, village bloodline unites with Haruto’s selected, show-quality heritage. And even now, their temperament already reflects the calm, balanced atmosphere both parents represent.

For us, this litter means more than just a genetic success – it is the fulfillment of a story, the beginning of a new chapter. Mimi and Haruto’s kittens will not only be beautiful cats – but living proof of what patience, love, and conscious breeding can achieve together.

All five are healthy, developing quickly, and already showing their playful, curious nature. We’re delighted to see them becoming more and more open to the world each day – and naturally, they are building closer bonds with each other and with us as well.

At the moment, the kittens are spending most of their time in the “nursery,” safely tucked under their mother’s protective paws. Mimi is an exceptionally caring mother—she feeds, cleans, and cuddles her little ones with all the devotion only an experienced queen can offer. The rest of the GreyHeart family is eagerly waiting for the day they can finally “meet” the babies in person.

At just eight days old, their eyes opened for the first time, marking the beginning of their journey of discovery. By the time they turned one month old, we began litter training and introduced supplemental feeding—gently, at their own pace, with close attention to their individual needs.

We’re watching with great excitement as each kitten starts to show their personality. Who will be the mischief-maker? Who will grow up to be the cuddliest lap cat? One thing’s for sure—each kitten is a world of its own, and we feel privileged to accompany them on this magical journey of growing up.

Focus on the Transylvanian breed

Even a few decades ago, residents of Csapi village remembered cats showing features characteristic of the Transylvanian breed. This supports the assumption that the genes of the cats introduced by the Countess had a long-term impact on the local population.

Mimi-Csapi GreyHeart is a direct descendant of these cats and has inherited the distinctive genes of the Transylvanian breed. The complete mapping of the Transylvanian genetic background is still underway: genetic samples from Mimi’s family (her daughter, granddaughters) are being studied by American geneticist Dr. Leslie Lyons, who is working on identifying the gene responsible for the Carpathian color variant of the breed.

Genetic testing

The genetic testing of the Csapi family covers a wide range of phenotypic and genotypic traits. The phenotypic analysis focuses on external features of the animals—such as coat color, coat structure, and body conformation—while genotypic testing uses genetic markers to study inheritance patterns and breed purity. The goal of the DNA-based testing is to reveal the distribution of specific genes that determine the distinctive traits of Transylvanian cats and to ensure the preservation of genetic diversity within the breeding program.

As a result of these studies, we will gain a more accurate picture of the breed’s origin and future development, thereby securing the Transylvanian cat’s pure lineage and healthy genetic makeup.

Our breeding philosophy

Grey Heart kennel places great emphasis on avoiding inbreeding to preserve the genetic diversity of Transylvanian cats. To this end, we incorporate external bloodlines into our breeding program. Recently, we welcomed two kittens and their mother, all belonging to the Transylvanian breed. The newcomers are developing beautifully and quickly won the hearts of our family with their friendly nature; their genetic testing is currently in progress.

Mimi-Csapi GreyHeart and her companions are living proof that the heritage of the Transylvanian cats lives on. As breeders, we are committed to the preservation, development, and promotion of this exceptional breed. Both the memories of the past and our current work serve the same purpose: to ensure that this unique cat breed continues to be part of the history and everyday life of the Carpathian Basin for a long time to come.
